Sea Scout Support Committee Mission Statement
MISSION
To develop, enhance, and expand Sea Scouting in a manner that emphasizes the purposes and achieves the objectives of
the Boy Scouts of America.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- To encourage councils, through regions, to expand Sea Scouting by chartering new Sea Scout Ships and
recruiting new leaders and members to existing Ships.
- To facilitate communication and cooperative efforts within the Sea Scouting community at the national,
regional, area, council, and Ship levels.
- To develop and supervise the policies and standards for Sea Scout advancement, training, activities,
programs, insignia, and uniforms.
- To develop and improve Sea Scouting literature, audiovisuals, and support materials.
- To develop Sea Scout leader training courses, both adult leader and youth, appropriate for delivery at
the Ship, council, area, regional, and/or national levels.
- To assist regions with Sea Scouting training and activities.
- To develop and support Sea Scouting functions at national Boy Scouting events, including but not limited
to national jamborees.
- To establish, develop, and maintain cooperative relationships with national boating and maritime
organizations including the U.S. Coast Guard and the U.S. Navy.
- To function as the authoritative group within the Boy Scouts of America for discussing boating safety
issues with the U.S. Coast Guard and other boating regulatory bodies.
COMMITTEE OPERATION
The Sea Scout Support Committee will meet at least annually at a time and location determined by the
National Commodore and staff adviser. Materials and programs will be mailed to the Committee for
reaction as needed.
The National Commodore, Sea Scouts will appoint committee members for one-year terms ending June 30 upon
approval of the individual's councils and region. The Commodore may appoint a National Boatswain with the
approval of the individual's council. Persons representing the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard will be invited to
participate in the annual committee meeting.
Persons appointed by BSA regions as Regional Commodores serve as ex officio members of the committee. This
position is optional within the region.
